75% of children walk, cycle, scoot, or take public transport to school daily

Picture

Our Ask

Ask #1: 75% of children walk, cycle, scoot or take public transport to school daily.

Vision

Children will be safe and healthy and will enjoy more independence to get to school.

Barrier

Kids tell us they want to walk, scoot or bike ride, especially with their friends. Streets are public places where kids should be free to play and explore their neighbourhood.
But our government isn’t designing our streets for people, they’re designing them for large fast cars.
Over time we’ve allowed our streets to become noisy, traffic-filled roads and it’s keeping us from making journeys that make us feel great by walking or riding a bike or scooter.

Action

We want state and local governments to create healthy, safe streets to school and around schools so that kids and parents and carers choose to walk, cycle, ride, scoot to school.
Another idea to help meet our target is opening the streets around schools to people who walk, ride, scoot - without traffic - at the start and end of each school day. The results:
  • Cleaner air
  • Safety
  • More families choosing to walk, scoot and cycle to school
While this may not work for all schools, there are plenty of school streets where this could make a radical difference to the health, wellbeing and safety of children and residents.
